EMOTIONAL DETOX | Sister BK Shivani

We can emotionally detox the mind and empower it through simple everyday practices

Our physical body is made from what we feed it – food, water and the air we breathe. Likewise, our mind is made from the information we feed it –everything that we read, listen, watch and converse.

We are what we what we watch, read and listen.  Today, in the name of knowledge and entertainment we are absorbing a whole lot of negative information through social media, print media, cinema and television. These emotions become a part of our mind. Thereafter, creating right thoughts and responses to a situation becomes difficult.

Suppose a family member has not returned home from office until late evening. Thoughts of accident or unpleasant scenes come naturally, while waiting for him. It feels difficult to assume he is fine. This happens because day after day, we fill our mind with news and visuals of violence, accidents, crime and calamities. So,it readily creates wrong thoughts.

We can emotionally detox the mind and empower it through simple everyday practices –

  1. The first few thoughts upon waking, are to be of gratitude. Connect to God and give gratitude in your own way. With the next two thoughts thank your mind and body for sustaining you. Then give gratitude to everyone around you and everything you use.
  2. Spend 3 minutes creating an affirmation for your tasks – whether relating to health, relationship, habit or project. Visualize vividly on the screen of your mind, everything being executed to perfection. The combined power of affirmation and visualization make it easier to manifest.
  3. Meditate for 20 minutes. Connect to God, send healing energy to your mind and body, and emerge your original qualities of peace, happiness and love.
  4. Study spiritual knowledge or self-improvement messages for 20 minutes to fill yourself with positivity.
  5. Exercise for 30 minutes. You can be more mindful, by paying attention to your breath. Inhale acceptance, exhale expectations. Inhale love, exhale anger… Right energy radiating to your body creates good health.
  6. Pause for a minute after every hour to check your thoughts. If there is any wrong thought, replace it immediately. You can also revise your morning affirmations along with visualising them.
  7. Take care that your thoughts, words and behaviours throughout the day are right.
  8. Shift from anger to compassion; resentment to forgiveness; doubt to trust; competition to co-operation; criticism to appreciation; expectations to acceptance.
  9. Stick to your work schedule, and disconnect from all forms of work communication from say 9pm to 8am — no phones, emails or messages. Setting such boundaries after office hours helps you rest, relax and rejuvenate your mind. It prepares you for a fresh new day at work.
  10. Always carry uplifting messages on your phone or carry a good book. Any moment you feel disturbed or low, immediately read or listen. This stops the series of negative thoughts. It serves as an emotional first aid kit.
  11. Delete negative and wasteful messages on social media apps just by sensing their quality, without going through them fully. Do not consume biased opinions, satire, judgments, slander or gossip. Otherwise negativity starts colouring your thoughts and feelings.
  12. Food and water have vibrations, so they deeply influence our mind. Eat Satvik food prepared and consumed in a pure state of mind. Eat mindfully, creating pure and positive thoughts of gratitude. Avoid distractions like gadgets and negative conversations at mealtime.
  13. Money is not just currency, it carries an energy of the way you work – how honest, ethical, caring and compassionate you are. It needs to come with blessings of your employer, co-workers or client, since it is used to buy food and comforts for your family.
  14. Just before bedtime, spend 15 minutes reading positive or spiritual messages. The positive energy calms your mind, ensuring your last thoughts for the day are not scattered around negativity.Avoid news, newspapers,TV shows or gadgets, an hour before you sleep.
