Akshay
Tritiya or Akhateej is one of the four most significant and
sacred days in a year for the Hindus and Jains. It falls on the third lunar day
of Shukla Paksha in the Vaisakha month. The literal meaning of the word Akshay
Tritiya is one that is indestructible or imperishable. Hence it is the day
which is eternal by nature. This day is believed to bring success and good fortune.
It provides the power to live life in the most contented manner. All actions
performed on this day gain a permanently auspicious result. As it is the
birthday of Parshuram (the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu), so this day is
also known as the ‘Parshuram Tithi’. The ‘Treta Yuga’ began from the day of
Akhateej, hence this day is also considered as the ‘Yugaditithi’- the day when
a new era ushers in. The most important quality of this day is that this tithi
possesses ever-lasting benefits. Hence, this tithi is also known as ‘Saubhagya
siddhi diwas’. In Matsya Purana, it is stated that whatever is donated on this
day becomes imperishable (akshay). Remembering Parshuram with reverence
provides one with blessings that stays forever. Observing a fast on this pious
tithi provides the highest results that are permanent. It is believed that
Satyuga commences from Akshay Tritiya.
On this propitious day, people should take a resolve to leave
behind all the negative aspects of their personality and adopt positive virtues
such as kindness, sympathy, brotherhood and love. Akshay Tritiya is the best
day for all kinds of auspicious occasions right from marriage and house warming
ceremonies to starting a new business venture or making foreign trips. According to the legend, any kind of venture
that is initiated on the favourable day of Akshay Tritiya, tends to grow big
and successful. According to Indian analysis of time or ‘Kaal’, Akshay Tritiya
is a “Swayam Siddha” muhurta or most auspicious moment.
This year this tithi falls on 14th May 2021.
